Games in the Classroom

I just wrote a paper on using video games in the classroom and just really wanted to put a little note on here about this issue. I wanted to include an article I found so that you guys could take a look at if ya'll had time. This is a very interesting subject. Video games are such a big part of some peoples lives now that I think it is a very important topic to talk about especially now that they are coming up with games for teaching. Here is one website. There are also a lot of really good journals on discus if you really want to check it out.

State Library /SC Discus

My all time favorite day this semester was the day we learned about The South Carolina State Library and Discus. Discus is the best website I have found for finding information. I have been on this website like twenty times now and I love it. I just really like how easy it is to use and the fact that it is free to use is always good. This was an awesome learning experiance I am really glad she came and spoke to us that day.

ETV Streamline

One of my two favorite days in class was when the ETV lady came to class. I really enjoyed learning about what all their site had to offer. I couldn't believe how much stuff they had for teachers, and parents, to use for education. Most of the videos on their are super cute and very imformative. I will be using this my classroom for sure. I am so glad we go the chance to learn our way around their site. Thanks ETV Streamline!

Copyright Topic

I just wanted to talk a little bit about Copyright in this blog. I had no idea how big of and issue it is in schools now. I didn't even know, well, I probably new this but didn't really think about it, that I couldn't use anything Disney in the classroom. I mean, I never really saw any Disney stuff in schools but didn't really think about why. I am just glad we had to learn about this topic because I didn't really know much about it. Here are a couple neat websites I found.

My Comments on The Multiple Intelligences Article

I just wanted to make a quick comment on how neat the article we read on Multiple Intelligences was. I found that article so interesting. I also really liked the little online test we took as well with our assignment that week. I was so happy to read about how Dr. Gardner was explaining the seven different intelligences. It made so much sense to me. When we were little there was only, are you good in math or English, there really wasn't much else out there. It was just very relieving to know that others are realizing that those aren't the only ways people are intelligent. That's all, just want to put my two cents in on that neat article! I guess I am considered smart in couple ways these days!

Edventure

My community resource project was on Edventure and I just wanted to put a couple things on here about it so that you would actually have a way to get more information about the place then just on the papers I handed out in class. Just wanted to mention a couple things about it that I thought were important. Don't forget that he museum offers a free walk though for teachers the first Tuesday and Thursday of every month between 3:30 and 5:00. All you have to do is call the Friday before at 803-400-1151. Also for those of you that want to teach really young kids they have Tuesday set aside as a special day for focus on children ages Pre-K through second grades, they do them same on Thursdays for third through six graders. They are open Tuesday-Friday with programs offered from 9:00-11:00 am, 11:00 am-1:00 pm, and 1:00-3:00 pm. Just a few quick reminders about the really neat program that is right down the road from all of us!

Information Literacy Standards and Lifelong Learning

I think that the information literacy standards are important to lifelong learning for many reasons. One of the most important reasons is that students have so much information coming at them at all times in this day and age. With computers, cameras, Internet, etc., there is so much to be learned. These guidelines are laid out for teachers so that they can produce lifelong learners who know how to use all of this information wisely and to their advantage. These standards are important for all ages of learners and all styles of learning. They are set up so that once a student gets out of school they will have the skills they need to research and get information appropriately.

Oak Grove Library Visit

I really enjoyed our trip to Oak Grove Elementary the other day. Ms. Harmon really opened my eyes to how interesting being a librarian can be. It is a lot more than the normal person would think. She also made me think a lot about how important collaboration is in schools these days. Especially with so many students that speak English as a second language. She talked a lot about how everyone in the school must really be a family and help each other out at all times. Everyone from the janitor to the student to the principal. She also talked a lot about how the library should be the hub for the school. I really enjoyed this meeting today. I really might think a little now about maybe one day going into being a media specialist, well, we will not rule it out, that's for sure.
